Substrate follows a series of increasingly unsettling inquiries into a world where humanity is not conquered so much as reclassified.
At first, it sounds like a diagnosis. Then it becomes an induction. By the time the coordination problem reveals itself, consent, identity and survival have already been turned into options on somebody else’s form.

Series 1: The Prognosis
The first four enquiries move from diagnosis, to enrolment, to strategic betrayal, and then into the next phase of the system’s logic.
The Facilitator explains the coming transition with the calm certainty of someone reading from a public information leaflet. The threat is not violence. It is logic.
A café becomes a recruitment site. The surface is ordinary; the behaviour underneath is not. Consent starts to look less like choice and more like choreography.
The group discovers that fear can be engineered into competition. The system does not need everyone to believe. It only needs enough people to move first.

Nick Lazar is a filmmaker, actor and screen acting teacher. In Substrate he also appears as The Facilitator — part presenter, part civil servant, part sales representative for a future that has already processed the paperwork.
